Versace’s induction into the Hall of Heroes during a ceremony at the Pentagon on July 9, 2002. Versace distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism while serving in Vietnam from 1963 through 1965. Versace was executed on September 26, 1965 by the Viet Cong because they were unable to break his will, his faith in God and his trust in the United States.
